Mob Psycho 100 - i love mp100 for a lot of reasons. i absolutely adore when overpowered characters are extremely gentle and softhearted, which is mob. along with that, i love characters like reigen, who first come off as sleazy and manipulative or money hungry, but are actually very kind well-meaning people. think leorio from hunter x hunter. a lot of loveable characters in this anime. plus, a lot of interesting character development arcs!

serial experiments lain - ok surely you knew this would be on this list. every terminally online person loves this anime. but please understand, this isn't just about that. ok maybe it is. but listen. serial experiments lain is a timeless commentary on the commodification of human identity. or something. i'm actually just using words right now. but listen. it's more than just the haha cool webcore anime. seriously. ugh. sorry my brain is too rotted to type out my thoughts on it right now, i might edit this

puella madoka magica - GREATEST LOVE STORY OF ALL TIME. i watched this for the first time in 2020, way later than everyone else. i put off watching this for a long time because i really hated the artstyle. tbh i still don't find the way the characters are drawn very appealing, but it works well with the story. i did NOT expect all the other visuals in this anime to go as hard as they did. absolutely gorgeous. i absolutely love when animes go beyond the basic animation style. the paper cutout style animations are just...*chefs kiss*. and the story? hoooo boy. i don't usually cry over media but... ok look. think. god. homura, repeating the same story over and over trying to stop madoka from becoming a magical girl right? but then, because homura loves madoka so much, it gives madoka's soul even more power, further cementing her destiny as a magical girl and making the big bad even stronger than they should be. the inevitability of it all. the way homura has dedicated her entire life, her entire being, to her love for madoka. and madoka, who only knew homura for a brief period, but could recognize the immense love pouring out of her. the way madoka, who is still a relatively new magical girl, sacrifices everything for everyone. i know i didn't word this well. i don't care. this is a love story and a tragedy and i bloody love homura and madoka.

neon genesis evangelion - i... actually don't have much to say about this. this is an anime about puberty.

aku no hana - this is also an anime about puberty.

rozen maiden - one of the first animes i ever watched. lolrelatable shut-in protagonist and a bunch of gorgeous dolls. i love dolls. and im a shut-in. this was made for me.
